Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Back
Whaley Thorns Community Primary and Nursery School provides a fully inclusive main stream primary provision. We strive to ensure that all pupils achieve their potential academically, personally, socially and emotionally in all areas of the curriculum regardless of their gender, ethnicity, social background, religion, sexual identity, physical ability or educational needs.

In the documents listed below you will find the ways in which our schools ensure they support all of our pupils including those with SEND in order that they can realise their full potential. We are continually developing new skills, resources and techniques to ensure our provision meets the changing requirements of our pupils.
Our SENDCO is Miss Hannah Slack and she can be contacted through the school directly or by completing the form below.

What steps do we take to prevent disabled pupils being treated less favourably than other pupils?

As a school, we believe strongly and it is our vision to put measures in place to provide an inclusive provision for our students, with a view to prevent the occurrence of each and every one of our pupils being treated less favourable that any other pupil in school. The school’s Accessibility Plan includes information about the steps we take to prevent disabled pupils being treated less favourably than others and the facilities we provide to help all of our disabled pupils access the school’s physical environment, the curriculum and the delivery of information in accordance with the Equality Act 2010.

We are currently in the process of gaining the Inclusion Quality Mark to evidences how we as a school strive to meet the needs of our disabled pupils. At Whaley we believe in working together to be the best that we can possibly be. We will ensure this by:

  • Children will receive high quality teaching using a range of stimulating resources that maximise the context of the local area and beyond.
  • Having high expectations of them to achieve through an appropriate curriculum.
  • The learning atmosphere will be safe, where children can express themselves in the security of an open and supportive classroom in which they can fully develop their academic and social skills.
  • Children will strive to maintain high standards of behaviour.
  • All children will have access to a carefully planned, balanced and relevant curriculum which promotes a positive attitude to learning.
  • Have high expectations set for all children in order to raise levels of achievement and make progress against their individual learning targets across the school.
  • We endeavour to meet the needs of all children within our environment.
  • The school will provide for the physical, social and moral development of every child.
  • Children will be encouraged to demonstrate attitudes of courtesy, sensitivity and tolerance. The school will not tolerate any discrimination or inequality of opportunity.
  • We aim to deploy our resources, both human and material as effectively as possible and aim to keep up with innovation.
